She was born on April 14, 1955, to Frank and Mary Tierney Merry and was a lifelong resident of Stamford. She graduated from St. Mary's Parochial School, Sacred Heart Academy in 1972, College of New Rochelle in 1976 and received her master's degree in educational technology/media specialist from Fairfield University in 1985.
