Don McLean, York Barbican, May 15

The 68-year-old American troubadour, from New Rochelle, New York, is forever associated with his early 1970s' hits American Pie and "Vincent " en route to amassing 40 gold and platinum records worldwide. In 2004, he was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and his songs have been recorded by artists from every musical genre, most notably Madonna's chart-topping re-interpretation of American Pie in 2000 and George Michael's version of The Grave in 2003, sung in protest at the Iraq War.
