Barnett was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Manhattan, to Barnett Walter Barnett and Philomena Cecilia Kiernan Barnett, and moved to New Rochelle, at an early age. He graduated from Iona Grammar School in 1931 and Iona Preparatory School in 1935.
