NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. A manhole explosion shook downtown New Rochelle both literally, and figuratively on Thursday, forcing the emergency evacuation of two nearby buildings. During the morning commute, a series of explosions could be heard on Harrison Street in New Rochelle after Con Edison equipment caught fire and combusted, sending flames and smoke billowing in the area shortly after 8 a.m. Firefighters swiftly responded from the nearby station, alerting Con Edison crews that their assistance would be needed.
